In this final essay on the Street Fighter extended universe, I’ll cover the Rival Schools series, which has a close connection to the main Street Fighter storyline, alongside Final Fight. I should also mention other games like Captain Commando, Strider, and Slam Masters, which share the same universe but have lore that’s more distant from the core Street Fighter story. The Slam Masters series ties more closely to Final Fight, as it features Haggar as a wrestler before he became mayor. Strider and Captain Commando, on the other hand, take place in a futuristic or dystopian timeline, with little connection to the main events of Street Fighter.
Okay, let’s start with Rival Schools. The series consists of only three games: Rival Schools: United by Fate (1997), the first game in the series; Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2 (1999), an updated version of the original featuring new characters; and Project Justice (2000), the sequel to the first game and the final installment in the series.
Rival Schools: United by Fate
The story starts in a Japanese city called Aoharu City. Several local schools have been attacked, and students and staff have been kidnapped. The characters in the game try to find out who is behind these attacks. The cut-scenes and fights show how they interact with other schools and with each other. Later, it is revealed that an elite school called Justice High is responsible. The player's team fights Raizo Imawano, the principal of Justice High and the first boss. If certain conditions are met during this fight, the story continues with a final fight against Hyo Imawano, Raizo's nephew and the real mastermind.
The single-player game in Rival Schools changes depending on which characters you pick. If you pick two characters from the same school (with a few exceptions), the game follows a story with set fights and short 2D cut-scenes before and after each fight to explain the story. If you pick two characters from different schools, the game plays like an Arcade Mode, where you fight random teams before facing the boss. In the arcade, you could only pick two characters from the same school at first, but over time you could pick any character. The PlayStation versions had all characters unlocked from the start and no restrictions.
Setting
Rival Schools takes place in Aoharu City, focusing on the students who go to different schools there:
- Taiyo High School
Motto: "A liberated school tradition yields carefree students."
A small campus with middle and high school. 720 students attend. The school values freedom and individuality. Uniform rules are relaxed. They consider extracurricular activities and personal traits in their entrance exams. Many students go on to college. Located at Taiyogaoka.
- Gorin High School
Motto: "A healthy mind, a strong body, and Olympian training."
Focuses on sports and character. Has 900 middle school and 1800 high school students. Scouts find talented athletes nationwide. Located at Asahigaoka.
- Gorin University
Offers university education focused on sports, sports medicine, and coaching. It helps keep the school's spirit alive for future athletes.
- Pacific High School
Motto: "Circulate elite education through the world using culture and sports."
Near a US military base, with many American students. Focuses on international culture and exchange. 500 students attend. Located at Taiyo Town.
- Gedo High School
Motto: "Use lessons that drill the mind to raise people who don't drift from the way of the people."
An all-boys school that once focused on traditional education and martial arts. Now it acts like a correctional school for troubled students. Located in an industrial area called Konsouibanchi. About 560 students attend. Daigo Kazama is the current leader.
- Seijun Jogakuin High School
Motto: "To raise women who display feminine virtues and the time-honored traditions of Japan."
An all-girls school on a small island. Most students live in dorms. The school is strict and old-fashioned. Students come from wealthy families. There is a secret all-girls gang led by Zaki, who manages rule-breaking without damaging the school's image.
- Justice High School
Motto: "A sound mind and body build excellent abilities."
A private school for elite students. It has a strict ranking system from J (lowest) to A (highest). Students live on campus and follow strict schedules. The principal, Raizo Imawano, based the school on ninja clan education. Located in a mountain village.
- Tamagawa Minami High School
Little is known except it appeared in Street Fighter EX. Sakura and her rival Karin attend. Karin calls it a "school for commoners," meaning middle and lower classes.
- Darkside Society
Most members of the Imawano clan (except Batsu) belong to this secret group also called the "reverse society." They want to rule the world, starting with Japan. After Raizo, Kyosuke, and Hyo were defeated and switched sides, the group decided to kill all Imawano members, including Batsu and Kyosuke. One member, Kurow Kirishima, has his own plans and created his own Student Congress.
Project Justice
One year has passed since the events of Rival Schools: United by Fate, and things have returned to normal in Aoharu City. Batsu Ichimonji, Hinata Wakaba, Kyosuke Kagami, and the other fighters have gone back to their regular school lives and enjoyed the calm after their last adventure. But this peace does not last long, and soon the fighters will face a new challenge.
Kurow Kirishima is a cold and ruthless ninja assassin from a secret group called the "Reverse Society." He wants to destroy the Imawano family and their friends to help him take over Japan. First, he attacks Raizo Imawano, the principal of Justice High and Batsu's father, to stop him from interfering. Next, he sends his older sister Yurika Kirishima and his loyal helper Momo Karuizawa to join the fighters and create tension and distrust among them. His third plan is to brainwash Daigo Kazama, the leader of the Gedo gang, to make his gang attack different schools and cause more trouble. Finally, Kurow plans to ruin Batsu's reputation by pretending to be Batsu's look-alike, called Vatsu, and attacking the fighters so they think Batsu is responsible.
Batsu and his friends must fight against Kurow's evil plans and try to keep their friendship strong despite the deadly ninja assassin's tricks.
Akira and her older brother Daigo Kazama are orphans. They used to live together in Daigo's home before Akira moved to the Seijyun dorms. Their parents were friends with a man who owns a garage. He taught Akira how to fix motorcycles and gave her a job there.
Rival Schools: United by Fate
Before Akira appears in the game, she shows up at the end of her brother Daigo's story. Daigo's story happens before the events of *Rival Schools: United by Fate*. Akira pretends to be a boy to enter Gedo High and find out what happened to Daigo after he disappeared while trying to solve school kidnappings.
When Akira first appears in *Rival Schools: United by Fate*, she wears a motorcycle helmet and biker clothes, pretending to be Daigo's younger brother. She makes friends with two of Daigo's helpers, Edge and Gan. They become suspicious and challenge her to a fight to see if she is really their boss's brother. After she wins, they all fight against Pacific High students Roy, Tiffany, and Boman, who were brainwashed by Hideo and Kyoko. Then, Natsu and Roberto tell them that Hideo, Kyoko, Roy, Tiffany, and Boman were brainwashed by Justice High School. Akira realizes her brother might have been brainwashed too.
After Hyo is defeated, the Gedo High group rescues Daigo. Akira reunites with him and speaks in a feminine voice, which confuses Edge and Gan. Akira then takes off her helmet and admits she is Daigo's younger sister, not his brother. Edge and Gan are surprised but accept her as a friend. They tell her they fought together to save Daigo, so she is now part of their team. Akira, however, wants to return to school as a normal student.
Project Justice
In *Project Justice*, Akira is now at the girls-only Seijyun High. The player follows her as she tries to find out what happened to Daigo, who changed after his training trip. She becomes friends with Yurika and later Zaki, who joins them after they beat her in a strength test.
The trio learns about Daigo's change and the new attacks on local schools. On the way, Akira is attacked by Batsu, but it was actually Kurow in disguise. They later fight the real Batsu, whom Akira thinks is the culprit. Gedo High and Seijyun High are close to a gang war.
Akira and Zaki meet a brainwashed Daigo. Akira tries to help him, but Edge and Gan say they must fight him to free him. During the fight, Zaki hears a whistle and realizes Yurika is secretly helping Kurow and Momo from the Darkside Student Congress by playing Kurow's flute to control Daigo.
If the player controls Akira, Edge, and Zaki, they defeat brainwashed Daigo and free him. Kurow reveals Yurika is part of the Darkside Student Congress. Yurika refuses to help her classmates and cares for her injured brother after he is defeated. This scene does not unlock Akira's powered form. The group follows Daigo to the mountains near Justice High, led by Yurika, who changes her mind and wants to help. Kurow calls her a traitor and tries to brainwash her, but Zaki stops him by taking his flute. Akira says she cannot forgive Kurow for breaking his family. She fights brainwashed Daigo again and vows to stop Kurow's plan.
After Kurow and Daigo are defeated, Akira tries to wake Daigo, but Yurika says he needs rest to recover. Edge gives Akira her black biker helmet and clothes as a gift from the school. Gan helps carry Daigo to safety.
Later, Yurika leaves Seijyun High because she feels guilty but returns and is welcomed by Akira and Zaki. Daigo recovers and decides to train more to avoid future problems. He leaves Edge and Gan in charge of Gedo High and gives his school jacket to Akira before leaving on another training journey.

Rival Schools: United by Fate
In Rival Schools: United by Fate, Batsu is a new student at Taiyo High School. He is looking for his missing mother, Shizuku Ichimonji. With the help of Hinata Wakaba and Kyosuke Kagami, Batsu finds out that his missing mother was taken by his estranged father, Raizo Imawano. However, Raizo was actually brainwashed by his nephew, Hyo Imawano. In Batsu's ending, he saves his mother and makes peace with his father after learning the truth. Two weeks later, Batsu has a bump on his forehead and tells Hinata and Kyosuke that his father hit him because of his bad grades.
Project Justice
In the sequel, Project Justice, which happens one year after United by Fate, Batsu is now in the second year of high school with Hinata, Kyosuke, and their friends. He is wrongly blamed for starting new attacks on local schools. The Taiyo High story shows two possible outcomes after Batsu, Hinata, and Kyosuke fight Kurow and a brainwashed Daigo:
- If the Taiyo High trio beats Akira, Yurika, and Zaki (who were attacked by Kurow disguised as Batsu's evil twin, Vatsu), Batsu and Kyosuke team up with Roy and Tiffany to save Hinata, who was kidnapped by Kurow and his helpers Yurika and Momo.
- If the Seijyun High trio wins (Akira beats Batsu in the first round), Akira says Batsu is not the real one and that the Batsu she knows is a better fighter. This makes Batsu angry and he runs away from his friends. Later, Batsu returns as "Burning Batsu" to help save Hinata, Kyosuke, Hayato, and Chairperson from Kurow (still disguised as Vatsu). Kurow runs away and Batsu reunites with his friends.
Both endings lead to a fight against the Darkside Student Council (Kurow, Yurika, and Momo) near Justice High. Kurow reveals he is behind the attacks to destroy the Imawano Family and their friends. After Kurow is beaten, he tries to have a brainwashed Hyo kill them. But Kurow is shocked to find out Hyo was never really brainwashed. Hyo pretended to be so he could get close to Kurow and learn his plans. Kurow gets angry and attacks Hyo but is badly hurt in the fight.
Hyo then becomes possessed by the evil spirit of his late father, Mugen Imawano. Raizo, who was hurt by Kurow earlier, arrives and tells Batsu, Hinata, and Kyosuke about the spirit inside Hyo. He tells Batsu and Kyosuke to defeat Hyo before the spirit takes full control. Hyo briefly regains control and asks them to kill him to honor the Imawano Family. Kyosuke feels sad to fight his twin brother, but Batsu says they have no choice because Hyo doesn't want the family name to be dishonored. Kyosuke agrees and joins Batsu and Hinata to save Hyo.
After a hard fight, Hyo dies from his injuries. Kyosuke mourns his twin brother's death in his arms. After this, Batsu tells everyone at Taiyo High about Kyosuke's disappearance. He, Hinata, Chairperson, Ran, and their classmates wait and hope Kyosuke will come back.

Rival Schools: United By Fate
Boman joins Roy and Tiffany in their investigation of the school kidnappings, though he is hesitant because he does not like violence. Along with his classmates from Pacific High, Boman is captured and brainwashed by Justice High to become a mindless servant. However, Boman and the others are freed by Batsu and his friends. In Boman's ending, he decides to stay in Japan to learn more about Japanese culture and help connect Japan and the United States. Roy and Tiffany support his decision before they leave and return to the United States. Later, Boman is seen with Batsu, Hinata, Natsu, and Gan holding a fund-raising event.
Project Justice
Boman is the main character in the Pacific High story. He sets out to find who caused trouble during an inter-school athletic competition. He is joined by two Taiyo High students, Ran and Chairperson, and later by his Pacific High classmates Roy and Tiffany. Roy and Tiffany come back to Japan to help Boman with the investigation. After the incident, Boman and Roy start a fight, which upsets Tiffany, but it turns out to be a strong fist bump. Roy tells Boman that he and Tiffany are going back to the United States and asks him to take care of things at Pacific High. The last scene shows Boman with Ran and Chairperson waving goodbye at the airport as Roy and Tiffany's plane flies by.

Daigo Kazama and his little sister Akira are orphans. They lived together at home until Akira moved to the Seijyun dorms. Their parents had a friend who owns a garage. When Daigo started at Gedo High, the school was chaotic. He gathered all the gangs under his control and became the school's top boss (総番長? "overall banchō").
Rival Schools: United by Fate
Daigo is a second-year student at Gedo High and the respected leader of the school gangs. In the single-player mode, Daigo has no set story, but it is said he went out alone to find who was behind recent school kidnappings. In his ending, he briefly beats Hyo Imawano, who had scarred Daigo's right eye with a katana. Suddenly, Hyo wakes up and attacks Daigo from behind, easily defeating him and later brainwashing him. One week later, Akira pretends to be a boy to enter Gedo High and find out what happened to her missing brother. Eventually, Daigo is rescued by Akira and his loyal friends Edge and Gan.
Project Justice
In Project Justice, Daigo is the main character in Gedo High's story. After returning from a personal training trip between Rival Schools and Project Justice, Daigo starts ordering his gang to attack other schools for no clear reason. Edge and Gan, his friends, begin to worry because Daigo is acting strange. Edge finds out that Daigo is being controlled by Momo. When Daigo leaves quietly to "deal with" Gorin High students, Edge becomes more suspicious of him.
When Gedo High and Seijyun High start a gang war, Edge and Gan realize Daigo is not the leader they know. They find out Daigo was brainwashed by Kurow as part of Kurow's plan to cause fights and distrust between schools. Edge and Gan help Akira try to wake Daigo from his brainwashing, but it doesn't work. They have to fight him with her help. Meanwhile, Zaki hears a whistle and sees Yurika playing Kurow's flute to control Daigo.
Daigo is freed from brainwashing when he joins his sister and friends, saying their combined strength broke the spell. If the player beats brainwashed Daigo without using Team Up or Party Up Techniques, it leads to a bad ending where Daigo dies from his injuries. To get a good ending, the player must lose to Daigo once or beat him once or twice using those techniques.
After Kurow shows his true self near Justice High, he tries to brainwash Daigo again with his flute. Edge tries to stop Kurow but is blocked by Momo. Zaki grabs the flute with her chains, and Daigo returns to normal.
After this, Daigo recovers and knows he must get stronger both physically and mentally to prevent this from happening again. He leaves Edge and Gan in charge of Gedo High and gives his school jacket to Akira. He says goodbye and leaves to train on another personal journey.
Edge is a student at Gedo High School and also a loyal member of the school's gang. Edge and Gan are two Gedo High students who join a disguised Akira to find the gang leader, Daigo, who disappeared while trying to solve recent school kidnappings. At first, Edge is suspicious of Akira and even fights her with Gan in a handicap match to see if she is really their boss' younger brother. But he later accepts her as a true friend, especially after she shows her real gender to both him and Gan. In his own ending, Edge first decides to stop fighting other students but changes his mind after some classmates encourage him.
Project Justice
In Project Justice, Edge, who surprisingly is now in his second year of high school, becomes very suspicious when Daigo returns and has him and Gan attack other schools for no clear reason. Edge is the only one who finds out that Daigo was ordered by Momo to deal with students from Gorin High. When Daigo leaves quietly to "take care of" the Gorin students, Edge starts to doubt his boss' strange actions.
When Gedo High and Seijyun High start a gang war, Edge and Gan realize that Daigo is not the same leader they respect. Something has changed in him during his training. They find out that Daigo was brainwashed by Kurow as part of Kurow's plan to cause fights and distrust between the schools. Edge and Gan quickly help Akira try to wake Daigo from his brainwashing, but it doesn't work. Akira has to fight Daigo with their help.
Meanwhile, Zaki hears a whistle and realizes Yurika is playing Kurow's flute to control Daigo. After Daigo is freed from brainwashing, he reunites with his sister and friends. He says their combined strength helped free him.
At a mountain near Justice High, Kurow shows his true self and tries to brainwash Daigo again with his flute. Edge tries to stop Kurow but is blocked by Momo. Luckily, Zaki uses her chains to grab Kurow's flute, and Daigo returns to normal.
After this, Daigo recovers and knows he must get stronger both physically and mentally to prevent this from happening again. He leaves Edge and Gan in charge of Gedo High and gives his school jacket to Akira. He says goodbye and leaves to train again on his own.
Gan is a student at Gedo High and a loyal member of the school's gang. He and Edge join a disguised Akira, who is on a mission to find the school's missing gang leader, Daigo, Akira's older brother. Like Edge, Gan is suspicious of Akira at first but later accepts her as part of the gang after she reveals who she really is. In his ending, Gan is inspired by his adventure to study harder in class, though he struggles. Edge sees Gan studying, and Gan says Akira told him to study more to earn respect. But Gan gets frustrated, tears his textbook in half, and says it's annoying. Akira comes in and scolds him, telling him the textbook wasn't free, which disappoints Gan.
In Project Justice, Gan's role is similar to Edge's. Both are ordered by Daigo, who has returned, to attack other schools for no clear reason. Soon, Gan and Edge suspect something is wrong with Daigo. They learn Daigo was brainwashed by Kurow, who wants to cause fights and distrust between schools. During a gang war between Gedo High and Seijyun High, Gan and Edge quickly help Akira, who tries to wake her brother from the brainwashing but fails. She then has to fight him with their help. Meanwhile, Zaki hears a whistle and realizes Yurika is playing Kurow's flute to control Daigo. When Daigo is freed, he reunites with Akira and friends, saying their combined strength broke the brainwashing.

After Kurow shows his true self near Justice High, he tries to brainwash Daigo again with his flute. Edge tries to stop Kurow but is blocked by Momo. Luckily, Zaki grabs Kurow's flute with her chains, and Daigo returns to normal. After this, Daigo recovers and decides he must get stronger both physically and mentally to prevent this from happening again. He leaves Edge and Gan in charge of Gedo High while he goes on another training journey. He also gives his school jacket to Akira and says goodbye.

Rival Schools: United by Fate
Hayato first appears in the PlayStation version of Rival Schools: United by Fate as a special character only for that console. When he hears about attacks on local schools, Hayato becomes very suspicious of the elite Justice High Academy. He decides to start his own investigation to find and stop those responsible for the attacks.
Project Justice
In the next game, Hayato teams up with Justice High teachers Hideo Shimazu and Kyoko Minazuki to investigate a new threat to the schools a year later. They find out that the attacker is a deadly ninja assassin named Kurow Kirishima. Kurow wants to create tension and distrust among the schools as part of his plan to destroy the Imawano Family and their allies.
After the fight, Hayato and Kyoko visit Hideo and Raizo Imawano in the hospital. Hideo is there because he got hurt during a fight with Hyo Imawano. Hayato feels jealous of Hideo because of his feelings for Kyoko, but he lets Hideo be with her. When Kyoko reminds Hideo about their upcoming wedding, Hayato happily congratulates them with tears of joy and laughter.

Hideo is a ninth dan master of karate, showing his skill in the Shimazu style. When his father, who was the dojo director, died, a big fight over the estate started. The fight became full of hate, and Hideo lost his right to inherit anything from his father. In his individual ending, he tells Kyoko about his early life and shows that he hates family fights after his father died. He decided to run away from the estate, which is why he lost his inheritance rights.
Rival Schools: United by Fate
Hideo first appears as a Japanese teacher sent with Kyoko to recruit students for Justice High School. In the story, both Hideo and Kyoko are brainwashed by the school principal, Raizo Imawano, to become his mindless servants after they begin to question Raizo's strange and scary actions. Later, students from Taiyo High School help Hideo and Kyoko break free from the brainwashing. In Hideo's story, he cares about Kyoko and, in his ending, he proposes to her. She accepts him emotionally and personally.
Project Justice
Hideo, Kyoko, and Hayato Nekketsu, the Taiyo High Physical Education teacher, look into who is behind new attacks on local schools. They find out that Kurow Kirishima, a student at Justice High, is the bad person causing the trouble. When Kurow, disguised as Batsu's evil double Vatsu, attacks and kidnaps Kyoko, Hideo teams up with Hayato to save her and stop Kurow. It seems that Hideo and Hayato are rivals for Kyoko's love.
After the fight, Hideo carries the dead Hyo's body from the burning Justice High building. Because of this and his own injuries from fighting Kurow and Demon Hyo, Hideo is taken to the hospital along with Raizo, who was seriously hurt by Kurow earlier in Project Justice. In the Justice High ending, Hayato lets Hideo be with Kyoko because of Hideo's feelings for her, saying he is "a lucky man." When Kyoko reminds Hideo about their upcoming wedding, he blushes with happiness while Hayato happily congratulates them with tears.

Before Batsu transferred to Taiyo High, the school was in a rough state. Hinata wanted her classmates to stand and fight with her, but no one had the courage—until Batsu arrived with his own mission: finding his missing mother, Shizuku. Even though Batsu didn’t want Hinata tagging along, she insisted, helping him along the way. Her determination paid off, as word of her teamwork with Batsu and fellow classmate Kyosuke inspired many students to take up martial arts, much to her surprise.
In Project Justice, Hinata once again teams up with Batsu and Kyosuke to investigate a new threat to local schools. Depending on the path, she might be kidnapped by Kurow and rescued by Batsu, Kyosuke, and the returning Roy and Tiffany, or she could lead Taiyo High’s investigation herself in Batsu’s absence, later being saved by him when attacked by a disguised Kurow. After the ordeal, Hinata is heartbroken to learn of Kyosuke’s sudden disappearance following the tragic death of his twin brother Hyo, and along with Batsu, Ran, Chairperson, and the rest of their classmates, she waits with hope and emotion for Kyosuke’s return.

Although still a high school student, Hyo was already very skilled at using a katana. The family that raised him was also part of the "Reverse Society." This group, which included Kurow Kirishima, planned to eliminate all members of the Imawano clan after Hyo failed in his mission. Before Hyo appeared in United by Fate, his father, Mugen Imawano, had already died for unknown reasons. In Project Justice, Mugen's evil spirit unexpectedly took over Hyo by force to fulfill his own goal of ruling Japan and the world. This means Hyo inherited his father's ambition. Hyo was possessed because one of his swords held his father's evil spirit.
Many people don't know this dark secret about Hyo: he could brainwash others because he was brainwashed by his father when he was a child. In other words, he has a "father complex."
Rival Schools: United By Fate
Hyo first appears in Rival Schools: United by Fate as the true final boss and main villain. If the player meets certain conditions during the fight with Raizo Imawano, it is revealed that Hyo is the real mastermind behind the story. He is very determined to take over Japan and the world by force. It is also shown that he brainwashed Raizo, who had just come back from another school he wanted to work with. Hyo is finally defeated by students from Taiyo High School, including his twin brother Kyosuke, who convinces Hyo that there are better ways to change the world than using force. Hyo accepts this and apologizes, making peace with Kyosuke and the others.
Project Justice
In Project Justice, Hyo is the final boss but not the main villain. In most of the Story Mode, he first appears to fight Kurow, who had been brainwashing Hyo earlier. Before defeating Kurow, Hyo pretends the brainwashing didn't affect him so he could learn Kurow's evil plan and insult him. This leads to a fight where Kurow is badly beaten.
After that, Hyo is taken over by his late father's evil spirit and becomes Demon Hyo, the final boss. Before fighting Kyosuke and Batsu, Hyo briefly regains control and asks them to kill him to honor the Imawano family. Then his father's spirit takes over again. Kyosuke frees and defeats Hyo, but Hyo seems to die from his injuries, which deeply saddens Kyosuke.
However, artwork from the August 2025 update in Capcom Fighting Collection 2 shows that Hyo survives but cannot fight. Kyosuke takes care of him. It is not known if Hyo's paralysis is permanent or temporary.
Rival Schools: United by Fate
Kyoko is a well-liked school nurse, later becoming a chemistry teacher at Justice High School. Beautiful and witty, she was once an assistant at an orthopedic surgery school and is highly skilled in orthopedics and anatomy, with the precision of a surgical genius. Many male students at Justice High are smitten with her, often faking illnesses or injuries just to visit the infirmary and be near her.
Kyoko, along with fellow teacher Hideo Shimazu, was sent on a mission to recruit new students for Justice High. Like Hideo, she was brainwashed by the principal, Raizo Imawano, into becoming a loyal servant after questioning his troubling behavior during the events of United by Fate. Eventually, students from Taiyo High manage to break the brainwashing. In her ending, the lessons she gains inspire her to confront a corrupt former employer, and she emotionally accepts Hideo’s marriage proposal.
Project Justice
Kyoko returns alongside Hideo and Taiyo High PE teacher Hayato Nekketsu, investigating the cause of new school attacks and searching for the culprit who seriously injured Raizo. She is later kidnapped by Kurow, disguised as Batsu’s evil double Vatsu, prompting Hideo and Hayato to join forces to rescue her and defeat Kurow through their brave actions.
After the incident, Kyoko and Hayato visit Hideo in the hospital, where he’s resting in a bed beside Raizo. When Kyoko brings up their upcoming wedding, Hideo blushes in embarrassment, while Hayato tearfully congratulates them with joy.

Kyosuke is a student at Taiyo High who volunteers to help Batsu and Hinata find Batsu's missing mother, Shizuku. But later, it is revealed that Kyosuke was the one who kidnapped her, working for his twin brother, Hyo. After spending time with Batsu and Hinata and learning how strong unity and friendship are, Kyosuke changes sides. He helps Batsu and Hinata defeat Hyo and convinces his brother that using force is not the way to reach their dreams. Kyosuke helps Hyo apologize and make peace with Batsu, Hinata, and the others.
Project Justice
In Project Justice, Kyosuke helps Batsu and Hinata again to investigate a new threat to the local schools. They find out that a deadly ninja assassin named Kurow Kirishima is behind the plan. Kurow wants to kill the Imawano Family and their allies. When the trio defeats Kurow, he tries to have a brainwashed Hyo kill them. But Kurow is shocked to learn that Hyo was never really brainwashed. Hyo pretended to be so he could get close to Kurow and find out his real plan. This makes Kurow angry, and he attacks Hyo but gets badly hurt in the fight.

When Hyo is suddenly possessed by the evil spirit of his late father, Mugen Imawano, Raizo arrives. Raizo had been badly hurt by Kurow earlier in Project Justice. He tells Batsu, Hinata, and Kyosuke about the evil spirit inside Hyo. Raizo tells Batsu and Kyosuke to stop Hyo while they still can. Hyo briefly takes control of his body and asks them to kill him to honor the Imawano Family before the evil spirit takes over again. Kyosuke feels sad about fighting his twin brother, but Batsu says there is no choice. Hyo does not want the Imawano Family name to be dishonored. Kyosuke puts aside his feelings and works with Batsu and Hinata to save Hyo.
After a hard fight, Hyo dies from his injuries. Kyosuke mourns the loss of his twin brother, who died in his arms. After this, Batsu tells everyone at Taiyo High that Kyosuke has disappeared. Batsu, Hinata, Chairperson, Ran, and their classmates wait for Kyosuke to come back.
In reality, as shown in artwork from the August 2025 update in Capcom Fighting Collection 2, Hyo survives but cannot fight. Kyosuke is taking care of him. It is not clear if Hyo's injuries will heal or if he will stay unable to fight.

In the updated version of Rival Schools: United by Fate, Nagare is introduced as a new character from Gorin High who follows Shoma to uncover who attacked and injured Shoma’s older brother, Shuichi. It’s later revealed that he saves and frees Shoma from Justice High’s brainwashing. In Project Justice, Nagare is now a student at the newly established Gorin University, a member of its swim team, and also works as a swimming coach for Gorin High. After Shoma parts ways with Natsu and Roberto to help Momo, Nagare teams up with them to find Shoma and helps defeat both the Darkside Student Congress (Momo, Kurow, and Yurika) and a possessed Hyo. Afterward, Nagare and Roberto share a laugh over the newly formed comical love triangle between Shoma, Natsu, and Momo.

Her goal is to find the people responsible for the attacks on Gorin. She eventually teams up with Shoma and Roberto, who are also investigating the case. However, she often argues with Shoma about how they should move forward with their mission. In her own ending, Natsu is on her way to Gorin High, thinking about how happy she is that the bad guys have been defeated and that her volleyball club friends have fully recovered from the attacks. She is also impressed by seeing Shoma fight during the ordeal. While talking to two volleyball club members near the school gate, Shoma walks by and makes a funny comment about Natsu. This makes Natsu chase after him in a playful way, while Roberto watches and thinks this is how Shoma and Natsu have fun with each other.
In Project Justice, Natsu is suspicious of the new student Momo and disagrees with Shoma when he wants to help Momo. After Shoma leaves to investigate with Momo, Natsu joins Roberto and Nagare to look for the people causing trouble at school. Later, she is the first to welcome Shoma back after Momo betrays him. After this, Natsu and Shoma have a private talk, hinting that they are ready to share their feelings with each other. But before they can, Momo suddenly hugs Shoma from behind because she has fallen in love with him after he defended her from Kurow and Demon Hyo. This makes Natsu upset, and she wants Momo to be kicked out of Gorin for what she did. Meanwhile, Roberto and Nagare talk about the funny love triangle between the three of them.

Raizo is first shown as the main bad guy in the game. He is the founder and head of Justice High School and is also the distant father of Batsu Ichimonji. Raizo used to be part of a ninja clan led by his family. His older brother Mugen, who has passed away, was the leader. Mugen is the father of Kyosuke and Hyo. Even though Raizo was respected in the clan, he was unhappy with their way of life. The ninjas had to always obey their leaders, and innocent people often got hurt, even if the ninjas didn't want that. Mugen wanted the clan to take over the world by force, but Raizo wanted to change the world through education. So, he left the clan to follow this dream. This meant leaving behind his wife Shizuku and his baby son Batsu to keep them safe from the clan's anger.
Many years later, Raizo's dream came true when he started Justice High School. He also adopted Hyo Imawano, the school's best student, as a son and future leader of the school. But Hyo is actually Mugen's son and wants to take over the world by force, just like his father. When Raizo finds out, he fights Hyo but loses and is brainwashed to serve Hyo without thinking. Later, Batsu and his friends help free Raizo from the brainwashing and defeat Hyo through their strong will.
Even though the school's reputation was hurt by Hyo's actions and the chaos that followed, Raizo made peace with his family and friends after the events of United by Fate. Now, he is more determined to teach his students how to make the world better and how to resist tricks like the ones Hyo used.
In Project Justice, Raizo is not a character you can play, but he appears in the Story Mode. Kurow Kirishima attacks Raizo suddenly, seriously hurting him and sending him to the hospital. This attack starts the main story of the game. Just before the final fight in the Taiyo High story, Raizo shows up and tells his son and Kyosuke about Mugen's evil spirit, which is controlling Hyo. He tells them to defeat Hyo, even if they have to kill him after hearing Hyo's last wish. However, as shown in artwork from the August 2025 update of Capcom Fighting Collection 2, Hyo survives but can't fight and stays under Kyosuke's care.
After the attack and Hyo's death two weeks later, Raizo is seen in the Justice High ending, resting in a hospital bed next to Hideo. Kyoko and Hayato visit Hideo there.

Ran is a student at Taiyo High with dreams of becoming a journalist. As editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, she dives into investigating kidnappings and disappearances, aiming for an exclusive scoop. Deep down, her motivation is personal—winning the prestigious Taiyo High First Prize Scoop. In Project Justice, Ran teams up with her classmate Chairperson and the reunited Pacific High trio—Boman, Roy, and Tiffany—on a joint mission to uncover those stirring chaos and mistrust among the schools. In the Pacific High ending, she starts a journal about Roy’s future, bidding farewell with Boman and Chairperson at the airport as Roy and Tiffany depart. In the Taiyo High ending, Ran takes a photo of her classmate Kyosuke after the tragic death of his twin brother Hyo, an act she later feels deeply guilty about. Following the incident, Kyosuke never returns to school, and Ran, along with Batsu, Hinata, Chairperson, and their classmates, waits with heavy hearts for his return.

Roberto is on Gorin High's soccer team. Even though he is part Brazilian, he is Japanese. When he heard that the top player on every sports team at Gorin High was attacked, and that two students, Shoma and Natsu, started investigating, he joined them. In the story, he often helps calm down Natsu and Shoma when they argue. Near the end of their mission, Roberto accidentally breaks his left arm. This worries him because he can't play his favorite position, goalkeeper, on the soccer team. But a scout offers him a chance to play as a forward instead. Roberto is very thankful and tries to shake the scout's hand with both hands. This makes him hurt his injured arm again, and both the scout and Roberto's mother laugh at him in a fun way.
In Project Justice, Roberto is again stuck in the middle of Natsu and Shoma's argument. This time, they argue about whether to investigate who attacked Momo earlier. Shoma leaves the team and goes with Momo, not knowing he is being used by Kurow to cause more trouble and distrust. Roberto and Natsu meet up with Nagare and keep investigating, not knowing that Momo has told the brainwashed Daigo to attack them if he sees them. Later, Shoma comes back to the team after Momo betrays him. Momo also joins the group after Kurow betrays her, and Shoma defends her and saves her from Demon Hyo, who tried to kill her. After this, Roberto and Nagare talk about the new love triangle between Shoma, Natsu, and Momo, as Shoma is humorously chased by both Natsu and Momo.

Roy is a wealthy exchange student from the United States and often appears in the games as Batsu’s rival. As the star quarterback of an unbeatable American football team, he’s admired by many male students back home. In United by Fate, his initial fear and dislike of Japan comes from stories his grandfather told him about losing his left leg during World War II. In the first game, Roy is sent by his father to investigate school kidnappings, joined by Tiffany and Boman. The trio ends up brainwashed into serving Justice High, but is later freed by Batsu and his Taiyo High friends. This experience prompts Roy to rethink his views on Japan. In his non-canonical ending, he returns to the U.S. with Tiffany, determined to change attitudes in his country, and eventually, 30 years later, becomes President of the United States.
In Project Justice, Roy and Tiffany return to Japan after learning of a new threat to local schools. They appear in two possible storylines—helping Batsu and his friends in the Taiyo High story or teaming up with Boman in the Pacific High story. In the Pacific High ending, Roy goes back to the U.S. with Tiffany, more determined than ever to make a positive change in the world.

Not much is known about Sakura's early life except that she is best friends with her classmate Kei Chitose and grew up with Hinata Wakaba and Natsu Ayuhara. Sakura started street fighting after she saw Ryu on her way to school and trained to copy his style. She remembers her first two fights: one was when older bullies stole Tsukushi's portable game console, and she won it back by beating them. The other was when she fought off a college student who was sexually harassing Kei and his friends. This second fight got her noticed by Karin and Shibasaki.

Sakura is a secret playable fighter in Capcom's 3D fighting game Rival Schools: United By Fate. In the story, Sakura goes to Tamagawa Minami High School but helps Hinata and Natsu, who now go to nearby Taiyo High and Gorin High. She gets involved in strange events around Aoharu City and tries to find who is behind the school kidnappings and attacks. After the school battles in Aoharu end, she realizes how important it is to protect what she cares about and wonders if Ryu has something to protect too.
In Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2, Sakura is one of the teachers during the fight against edited characters in a single round. To raise all their stats, the player must defeat her. But if the edited character loses, their stats do not go up because she is very strong or because they were beaten by her Burning Vigor attacks.

Shoma looks for the people who hurt and put his older brother Shuichi, who also plays baseball, in the hospital. He later teams up with Natsu and Roberto when he finds out they are also doing similar investigations in their own way. Depending on the characters chosen in the game, Shoma's fate changes. In Nagare's ending in Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2, Shoma is captured and brainwashed by Justice High School to serve them. Nagare later saves him and frees him from the brainwashing. In Shoma's own ending, he, Natsu, and Roberto visit Shuichi in the hospital. Shuichi notices Shoma's feelings for Natsu and calls Natsu Shoma's "girlfriend," which makes Natsu blush. Then, Natsu and Roberto leave the hospital.
In Project Justice, Shoma becomes friends with Momo after she is bullied by Batsu (who is actually Kurow in disguise, using the name "Vatsu"). But Momo's request for help causes Shoma to drift away from Natsu and Roberto. After helping Momo in several fights against other characters, Shoma is betrayed by her. He finds out Momo used him to create tension and distrust among the schools as part of Kurow's plan. Later, Shoma reunites and makes up with his friends.
After this, Shoma wants to talk to Natsu alone, maybe to tell her how he feels. But Momo surprises him by hugging him from behind. She has a real crush on him because he defended and saved her from Kurow and Demon Hyo. Natsu is upset and wants to kick Momo out of Gorin for what she did before. While this funny situation happens between Shoma, Natsu, and Momo, Roberto and Nagare joke about the love triangle forming between the three.
In Rival Schools: United by Fate, Tiffany teams up with Roy and Boman to investigate a series of school kidnappings, motivated by her crush on Roy and her desire to help him solve the case. During their investigation, the Pacific High trio is captured and brainwashed into serving Justice High, but they’re eventually rescued by Batsu and his friends. In her ending, Tiffany returns to the United States with Roy and begins training as his bodyguard, while Roy starts studying American politics.
In Project Justice, Tiffany unexpectedly returns to Japan with Roy to investigate a new threat to local schools. She appears in the Taiyo High story, helping rescue Hinata so they can join Roy, Batsu, and Kyosuke in their fight against the Darkside Student Congress, or in the Pacific High story, where she and Roy reunite with Boman and work with Ran and Chairperson on a new investigation. In the Pacific High ending, she goes back to the United States with Roy, determined to support his bold ambition to change the world for the better.

koShe first shows up in Hinata's ending in Rival Schools: United by Fate. She tells Hinata that their classmates were inspired by Hinata to start learning martial arts. In this ending, Chairperson is called Class Leader.
Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki 2
In the Nekketsu Seisyun Nikki mode, Chairperson explains how to play. On the first school days, she asks the player to join a club. If the player chooses not to join a club (called "going home club" in the game), she becomes the player's instructor. Chairperson's actions cause random changes to the Edit Character's stats, sometimes making them go up or down.
Project Justice
Chairperson is playable for the first time in Project Justice. She appears in two storylines in the game.
In one Taiyo High storyline, she goes with Hinata and Kyosuke after Batsu disappears for a short time following his surprise loss to the Seijyun High Team (Akira, Yurika, and Zaki). When Batsu comes back, she helps take care of her injured schoolmates and Hayato, who was hurt by Kurow. Kurow was disguised as Batsu's evil twin called "Vatsu."
In the Pacific High storyline, she helps Boman investigate after some Pacific High students, who were unknowingly brainwashed by Kurow, caused trouble at the Taiyo-Pacific High sports event at the Gorin Dome. After fighting Hayato, Ran joins Boman and Chairperson in the investigation.
After the event, Chairperson talks with Boman, Roy, Tiffany, and Ran. Then, she, Ran, and Boman watch a plane take off as Roy and Tiffany return to the United States. Back at Taiyo High, she feels sad when she hears the shocking news that Kyosuke has disappeared after the death of his twin brother Hyo. She, Batsu, Hinata, Ran, and their classmates wait for Kyosuke to come back.

Kurow is the main villain in Project Justice. He appears in different stories early in the game's Story Mode, sometimes as himself and sometimes as "Vatsu," an evil copy of the main hero, Batsu. Kurow attacks groups of students and causes fights and distrust between the local schools. He is helped by his loyal followers: his older sister Yurika, his admirer Momo, and a brainwashed Daigo.
Kurow was sent by the "Reverse Society," which includes the Imawano family, to kill Batsu, Raizo, Kyosuke, and Hyo. This mission came after Hyo failed a similar task last year. Kurow seriously hurts Raizo, sending him to the hospital, but he chooses not to kill Raizo because he thinks Raizo will be useful later. Kurow also brainwashes Daigo and Hyo using his flute and pretends to be Vatsu, Batsu's evil double, as part of his plan. However, Kurow has his own goal, different from the group that used him: he wants to take over Japan and the world by force. In short, he is an assassin who has gone crazy.

At one point, Kurow reveals he is the real leader behind the recent chaos among the schools. After the player's chosen group of students defeats him, Kurow tries to send a brainwashed Hyo to attack them. But Hyo shows that he was never really brainwashed. He only pretended to be so to get close to Kurow and learn his plan, insulting Kurow in the process. Kurow and Hyo then fight quickly, and Kurow is badly beaten by Hyo. After the fight, Hyo changes into his evil form, Demon Hyo. The battle with Demon Hyo will eventually lead to Hyo's death.
After the final fight in Story Mode, Kurow is shown in the hospital. But he escapes after a few days. No one knows where he went after that.

Momo pretends that Batsu (Kurow disguised as "Vatsu") bullied and attacked her. Shoma offers to help, not knowing about her plan. Natsu, for some unknown reason, quickly starts to distrust Momo. This leads to an argument between Natsu and Shoma. After a fight, they decide to go their separate ways. Meanwhile, Shoma goes on a wild adventure to help Momo, while Natsu, Roberto, and Nagare work together to solve the mystery of the new threat.
Later, after Shoma and Momo defeat the Pacific High team of Boman, Roy, Tiffany, and their Taiyo High friends Ran and the Chairperson, Momo betrays Shoma. The group finally makes Shoma see that Momo was using him all along as a pawn to create tension and distrust among the local schools in Aoharu City.
Near Justice High, on a local mountain, Momo tells Shoma (who has reunited and apologized to Natsu, Roberto, and Nagare) that she is part of the Darkside Student Congress, led by herself, her boss Kurow, and his older sister Yurika. After Kurow loses to the reunited Gorin High team, he shocks everyone by betraying Momo. Shoma surprisingly defends her despite what happened earlier. Kurow later suffers a harsh defeat at the hands of Hyo.
After this, during a private talk between Shoma and Natsu, Momo suddenly hugs Shoma from behind. Her fake crush on him has turned into a real one because of his kind and noble actions. Natsu is upset and wants Momo expelled from Gorin for what she did. This leads to a funny love triangle between Shoma, Natsu, and Momo.
Shoma is then humorously chased by both Momo and Natsu while Roberto and Nagare watch from a distance. They comment on the new funny love triangle between Shoma, Natsu, and Momo.

After the events of Rival Schools: United by Fate, Akira transferred to Seijyun High, where she initially had no friends. That changed when she met Yurika and confided in her about her worries over her older brother, who had been acting strangely since returning from his personal training journey. Yurika agreed to help Akira investigate the problem, and they were soon joined by Zaki on their quest. Unbeknownst to Akira and Zaki, Yurika was actually part of her younger brother’s scheme to stir tension among the schools as part of his plan to conquer Japan and the world by force. Kurow had ordered her to distract Akira, working alongside her co-conspirator Momo. However, Yurika’s growing friendship with Akira and Zaki led her to change her mind, deciding she no longer wanted to cause trouble. She switched sides, helping Akira, Zaki, Edge, and Gan save Daigo from brainwashing.
Afterward, Yurika left Seijyun High out of guilt for her role in Kurow’s plan, but eventually returned, where she was warmly welcomed back by both Akira and Zaki.

Before entering high school, Zaki was a popular gang leader of a group called the "5,000 Ladies." Because of this, her parents and some family members decided to send her to Seijyun High to help her become a "pure" woman. This meant she had to leave her "Ladies' Team" behind.
In Project Justice, Zaki is approached by Akira and Yurika, who ask for her help to find Akira's older brother, Daigo. Daigo had suddenly started ordering his followers to attack random schools for no clear reason. Zaki agrees to help only if either Akira or Yurika can beat her in a match. Akira wins, and Zaki is impressed that Akira is really Daigo's younger sister.
They start their mission and meet Batsu's team and the teachers Hideo, Kyoko, and Hayato. In both meetings, Zaki shows her tough side, especially toward Batsu for what seemed like an attack on Akira (which was actually done by a fake Batsu), and also toward the teachers.
During the school gang war between Gedo High and Seijyun High, Zaki leads most of the girls to fight off the Gedo High students. Later, she and Akira face Daigo, who has been brainwashed by Kurow. Akira tries to help her brother, but it doesn't work. So, Akira has to fight him with help from Zaki, Edge, and Gan.
During the fight, Zaki hears a whistle and realizes Yurika is secretly working with Kurow and Momo from the Darkside Student Congress. Yurika is using Kurow's flute to control Daigo while he is brainwashed. After Daigo is freed, the group chases Kurow to the mountains near Justice High. Kurow shows his true identity and tries to brainwash Daigo again with his flute, but Zaki hits Kurow with her chain, making him drop it.
Yurika feels very guilty for helping Kurow and decides to join Akira and Zaki to stop Kurow's evil plan. After this, Zaki is at first unsure about forgiving Yurika but changes her mind when she sees Akira warmly welcome Yurika back. Zaki thinks about how Akira's strong will helped Yurika return emotionally.
