Street Fighter Extended Universe: Final Fight

This is a single essay covering the entire Final Fight series. It will start with the story of the main game trilogy, then move on to the background stories of the characters. Some of these were already introduced in the Street Fighter essay, but here you’ll get to read their original stories from Final Fight.

Some background leading up to the events of the first game: Bushinryu’s origins are said to date back roughly 550 years to the 14th century AD. In 1976, a 9-year-old Cody began practicing and developing his own street fighting style, blending boxing with his black-belt level skills in martial arts like karate.

By 1983, Mike Haggar, then 40 years old, was still defending his title as a professional wrestler. Three years later, in 1986, Haggar retired from wrestling and was elected Mayor of Metro City, vowing to clean up the streets—even if it meant getting his own hands dirty.

Final Fight 1

The story of Final Fight happens in the made-up city of Metro City. For many years, crime and violence have ruled the streets, and the people live in constant fear because of local street gangs. This has made Metro City famous as a crime capital of the world. Mike Haggar, a former pro wrestler and street fighter who is now the mayor, promised during his campaign to clean up the city. He wants the people of Metro City to live in peace and happiness.

The Mad Gear Gang is the strongest and most powerful criminal group in Metro City. They see Haggar as a threat to their control of the city. So, they quickly make a plan to stop him from interfering with their crimes. One day, while Haggar is in his office, he gets a strange phone call. A man tells him that his daughter, Jessica, has been kidnapped by Mad Gear. The man warns Haggar that if he tries to stop them, bad things will happen, just like with the last mayor.

Haggar knows this is serious. He quickly tells Jessica's boyfriend, Cody, and his friend and sparring partner, Guy, about the kidnapping. Cody and Guy decide they must help Haggar save Jessica and stop Mad Gear.

Haggar, Cody, and Guy go out into the streets of Metro City to fight Mad Gear. They battle many gang members and the gang's leaders: Damnd, a thug from the Caribbean; Sodom, an American who loves Japan; Edi. E, a corrupt cop; Rolento, a former soldier; and Abigail, who has a bad temper. After fighting through all these enemies, the three face the gang's boss, Belger, in his penthouse apartment at the top of a tall building.

In a tough final fight, Cody punches Belger out of the window, and Belger falls to his death. Jessica is saved, and she and Cody share a happy kiss, glad to be together again after the danger.

The original Japanese version of the Final Fight intro says the game happens in 1989 and gives the ages and birthdays of the main characters. The English version changes the time to "Sometime in the 1990s..." and only gives the characters' birthdays. The English version in Final Fight One goes back to the original 1989 date.

Final Fight Revenge

The main plot revolves around riots breaking out in Metro City, during which Jessica Haggar goes missing. Some of the original Mad Gears are also attempting to regroup. While none of the characters’ endings address Jessica’s fate, developers have stated she was rescued by Mike, after which she broke up with Cody and left Metro City to study in Europe. Though the game’s canonical status is debatable, it does offer some background for Cody’s drastic change in personality and appearance when he became a playable character in the Street Fighter series.

Final Fight 2

After Belger died in the last game, the Mad Gear Gang was likely destroyed. Cody, Haggar, and Guy, who saved Jessica from the gang, became heroes in Metro City. The people of Metro City had wanted peace and happiness for many years. After their fight with Mad Gear, Cody and Jessica went on a vacation, and Guy left to train. Haggar went back to his job as Mayor of Metro City.

But the heroes did not know that some Mad Gear members had quietly left Metro City after Belger died. They wanted revenge and became a new international criminal group with a new leader. While Guy was training, Mad Gear kidnapped his girlfriend Rena and her father Genryusai. Rena's sister Maki called Haggar for help. She said she had a lead that some Mad Gear members were in Hong Kong doing crimes. Haggar agreed to meet Maki in Hong Kong. He was joined by Carlos Miyamoto, a martial artist who was training under Haggar and wanted to help because he owed Haggar and Guy a debt.

The three arrived in Hong Kong and stopped the local Mad Gear group. They questioned the leader, Won Won, who said Mad Gear had moved to Europe and took Rena and Genryusai there. Haggar, Maki, and Carlos went to Europe and stopped Mad Gear in several countries. In Italy, they met Rolento. After beating him, Rolento told them to go to Japan to fight his new master if they wanted to save Rena and Genryusai. He warned that his master was very powerful and could kill them.

The trio went to Japan and faced the new Mad Gear leader, Retu. Rena and Genryusai were hanging from the ceiling by ropes. After a hard fight, Maki kicked Retu out of a window, killing him like Belger was killed in the first game. After defeating Retu and destroying Mad Gear, Maki happily reunited with her family. Rena and Genryusai thanked Maki, Haggar, and Carlos for saving them. Later, Rena sent a letter to Guy, asking him to finish his training soon so they could be together again. Guy read the letter while on a ship and promised Rena he would come home soon. He also thanked his friends for helping him, Rena, and Genryusai.

Final Fight 3

After the Mad Gear Gang was completely destroyed in the last game, a power gap appeared in Metro City's criminal world. This gap made the other local street gangs fight each other to become the top gang. In the end, the Skull Cross Gang, which used to be part of Mad Gear, won and beat the other gangs. They quickly started their own crimes to take full control of the city.

A few months later, Mayor Mike Haggar was in his office talking with his old friend Guy when a sudden explosion shook Metro City. Detective Lucia Morgan from the Special Crimes Unit rushed in and told Haggar that a big riot had started in the city center. Before they could decide what to do, a stranger appeared and said he knew what was happening and offered to help. Haggar, short on time, agreed but warned he would fight him if it was a trick.

The four of them went to the Police Station, where a jail break had just happened. They followed the trail and were attacked by Dave, a corrupt cop working for Skull Cross. They beat him, but he delayed them enough for the others to escape. They soon realized the riot was a distraction so the gang could free one of their leaders from jail.

With no more time to lose, the stranger introduced himself as Dean. He said he was once just a street fighter but refused to join Skull Cross. In revenge, they killed his whole family. Now, Dean wanted to fight and destroy Skull Cross to avenge them.

Haggar, Guy, Dean, and Lucia worked together to fight the Skull Cross Gang members and leaders all over Metro City. This led to a final battle at Skull Cross HQ. On the roof helipad, they faced Black, the gang's leader and founder. After a hard fight, Black was knocked into a high-voltage transformer, killing him and causing the building to explode. Haggar, Guy, Dean, and Lucia escaped safely.

They thought about how Haggar, as mayor, would help rebuild the city. Dean, having avenged his family, said goodbye and left to start a new life. Haggar, Guy, and Lucia watched the sunrise over Metro City, knowing the adventure was over and the city would soon be peaceful again.

Alright, let’s dive into the characters’ backgrounds, starting with Haggar.

After retiring from wrestling, Haggar ran for mayor of Metro City and won. He promised to reduce the city's rising crime rate. The story of Final Fight is about the Mad Gear Gang trying to control Haggar by kidnapping his daughter, Jessica. Instead of giving in, Haggar asks Jessica's boyfriend, Cody, and his friend Guy to help fight the gang and defeat their leader, Belger.

In Final Fight Revenge, Haggar's story is again about his daughter disappearing after riots in Metro City. Jessica's disappearance is not solved in Haggar's ending, which is similar to Rolento's ending in Street Fighter Alpha 2, where Rolento tries to take over the city. Later, the Street Fighter Zero 3 Secret File Book says Haggar saved Jessica. Jessica left Metro City around the time of Street Fighter Alpha 3 because she was upset with Cody. Cody couldn't stop his harmful fighting habit and was arrested for assault. Jessica decided to study in France.

In Final Fight 2, Haggar fights the revived Mad Gear Gang led by Retu to save Guy's girlfriend and master. He is joined by Maki, Guy's future sister-in-law and a Bushin-style fighter, and Carlos Miyamoto, a South American swordsman and friend of Haggar.

In Final Fight 3, Haggar teams up again with Guy. They join Lucia, a female cop, and Dean, a former Street Fighter, to fight the Skull Cross Gang. This new gang has taken over Mad Gear's place as the main gang in Metro City.

In the Slam Masters series of wrestling games, Jessica is 18 years old and is called "Pretty Doll" by her wrestling valet nickname. She appears whenever Mike "Macho" Haggar wins a match, walking to the ring to celebrate with her father. The international versions of Slam Masters say the series happens after Final Fight, but the Japanese versions (called Muscle Bomber) say it happens before Final Fight, with Haggar starting his run for Mayor. In a story from the game, Haggar once fought Lucky Colt (called Gunloc in English versions) because Lucky Colt tried to hit on Jessica. This happened before she started dating her childhood friend Cody in Final Fight.

Final Fight and Street Fighter series
In Final Fight, Jessica is kidnapped by the Mad Gear Gang to force her father Haggar, now the Mayor of Metro City, to stop fighting crime and corruption. Instead of giving in, Haggar fights the gang to save her, with help from her boyfriend Cody and his friend Guy. The three manage to rescue Jessica at the end of the game.

Jessica appears in many later games after the original Final Fight. In Final Fight 2, she is seen in a photo with Cody, Haggar, and Guy at the start of the game. The intro says she is on vacation with Cody during the story.

In Street Fighter Alpha 2, Jessica is seen hugging her boyfriend Cody in the background of Guy's Metro City stage. When Cody looks at a female fighter, a jealous Jessica slaps him to get his attention back.

Final Fight Revenge (which happens between Final Fight and Street Fighter Alpha 3) is about Haggar and Cody looking for Jessica after she disappears during riots in Metro City after the Mad Gear Gang is defeated. The game never shows where she is in any ending. Later, the Street Fighter Zero 3 Secret File Book says Haggar rescued Jessica, and she left for Europe during the events of Street Fighter Alpha 3.

In Street Fighter Alpha 3, Jessica and Cody are apart because Cody got into too many street fights and was arrested for aggravated assault. The story only says that Jessica left Metro City to study in France.

In the original Final Fight, Cody teams up with his best friend and rival Guy, and the Mayor of Metro City, Mike Haggar, to save Jessica, Haggar's daughter, from Belger, the leader of the Mad Gear gang. Cody fights many of Mad Gear's toughest thugs, including Damnd, the first gang member to kidnap Jessica, and Edi. E, a corrupt police officer who uses a gun and baton against Cody, making the fight very hard. Cody often fights alone, letting the others chase the other bosses in Metro City. In the end, Cody faces Belger on the top floor of his penthouse. After a tough fight, Cody knocks Belger through a window with an uppercut, and Belger falls to his death on the street below. Cody is then praised as the hero of Metro City. Jessica wants to celebrate with Cody, but he says he can't stay still while evil is still in the city. After a passionate kiss with Jessica, Cody leaves the city to parts unknown.

He returns to Metro City after a year of traveling and learns that the Mad Gear gang is starting to come back. He also finds out that his girlfriend Jessica has gone missing after riots broke out in the city following Mad Gear's destruction. Wanting to prove he is Jessica's hero, Cody tries again to save her, fighting many thugs along the way. Sadly, Cody does not get to keep searching for Jessica because he is arrested by Edi. E for crimes done by Mad Gear member Poison and for the many street fights Cody was involved in. Jessica's location is never explained in any of the playable characters' endings. However, design sketches for Cody from Street Fighter Zero 3 and the Street Fighter Zero 3 Secret File Book show that Haggar was able to rescue Jessica. They also show that Jessica and Cody ended their relationship badly because Cody was jailed for his reckless street fighting. Jessica then decided to study abroad in Europe. Even after his arrest, Cody kept training.

Guy was born somewhere in the United States to Japanese parents, likely in one of Metro City's districts, and moved there early in his life. In the late 1970s to early 1980s, Guy was a troublemaker in Japan. He was wild, with sharp eyes and a fierce attitude. He often got into street fights, no matter how big his opponents were. One day, Guy tried to attack Zeku, the 38th Bushin Master. Zeku easily dodged the attack, and when Guy tried again, Zeku used a technique that knocked him away. Zeku then told Guy he used a Bushin style move and asked for his name. Together, they brought back the secrets of Bushin-ryu ninpō (Spiritual Warrior School of Ninja Arts). After failing his university entrance exam, Guy went to the United States alone.

 Final Fight History

Final Fight
Guy is one of three playable characters, along with Cody and Haggar, in the original arcade version of *Final Fight*, released by Capcom in 1989. Because of hardware limits on the Super NES, two versions of *Final Fight* were made: the first in 1990 where Cody is playable, and the second in 1992 where Guy is playable. In *Final Fight Guy*, the story explains that Cody was away training under Guy's grandsensei in Japan.

Story

In 1986, Mike Haggar becomes mayor of Metro City and promises to clean up the streets. But the powerful Mad Gear Gang has other plans and kidnaps Haggar's daughter, Jessica, to force him to cooperate. Haggar refuses to give in. He teams up with Jessica's boyfriend and childhood friend, Cody, and her bodyguard and new friend, Guy. Together, they fight the Mad Gear Gang in the streets of Metro City.

They split up, and Guy meets Sodom, the second leader of Mad Gear, in a subway hideout. They fight in an underground ring, and Guy easily wins. Guy then goes to the industrial district, fights many thugs, and meets Rolento, the fourth Mad Gear leader. Rolento is impressed by Guy's skills and offers him a place in Mad Gear, but Guy refuses, saying that as a Bushinryu fighter, he must fight evil. They fight, and Guy wins, leaving a scar on Rolento's face with a knife.

Guy and Cody then go to the bay area to face Abigail, the fifth Mad Gear leader and a strong wrestler. Abigail taunts Cody, saying the Mad Gear boss Belger is having fun with Jessica. Cody rushes off, leaving Guy to fight Abigail alone. Guy wins after a tough fight, dodging Abigail's strong punches and hitting him with many combos until Abigail coughs up blood and falls.

Later, Guy meets Haggar and Cody, who are going to the uptown area where Belger and Jessica are. Cody knocks Belger out of a high-rise window, and Belger falls to his supposed death. Haggar hugs his rescued daughter, but Cody and Guy leave, knowing the fight is not over. Jessica calls out to Cody, but he ignores her. Guy, annoyed by Cody's behavior, stops him by knocking him down and then leaves, letting Cody explain himself to Jessica.

The events of *Final Fight* make the three heroes famous in the city. Guy also learns that fighting many enemies at once is the key to the Bushin style.

After Mad Gear's first defeat in *Final Fight*, the gang returns. While Guy and Cody are away (Guy is training in Japan), Mad Gear kidnaps Guy's grandsensei Genryusai and Rena, Guy's fiancée and Genryusai's daughter. Haggar teams up with Rena's sister Maki and Carlos, a South American swordsman, to rescue them. They succeed, and Guy writes to thank them, saying he will return soon. Guy is not playable in this game, but some power-ups are based on him.

Final Fight 3

After Mad Gear's last defeat in *Final Fight 2*, a gang war breaks out in Metro City. The Skull Cross Gang becomes the strongest. Guy returns to Metro City after training and meets Mayor Haggar. The Skull Cross Gang sets off a bomb and causes a riot downtown, freeing their leader Black from prison. Joined by police officer Lucia and a street fighter named Dean, Guy and Haggar fight the new gang. On the gang's rooftop base, they defeat Black, who falls into a high-voltage transformer and dies, ending the Skull Cross Gang.

Final Fight Revenge

In 1988, Guy returns to Metro City and finds a dark, evil force in the city. He discovers it is a zombified version of Mad Gear's former leader, Belger. Guy fights and defeats Belger but is bitten and infected with a strange illness. Guy goes back to Japan to focus on fighting the illness through intense meditation.

Before *Street Fighter Alpha 3*, Guy fully recovers from the illness.

Damnd was a top helper in Belger's Mad Gear Gang. His first job in the gang was running drugs in Metro City. He also controlled the gang's information network, getting tips from the local police and the FBI with help from Edi. E. In 1986, Mayor Haggar refused to take bribes and did not let the gang do whatever they wanted like the last mayor did. Belger sent Damnd to find and capture the mayor's daughter, Jessica, and Damnd succeeded in kidnapping her. Then Damnd called Mayor Haggar and told him to turn on his TV. When Haggar did, he saw Damnd on the screen, laughing wildly while showing pictures of Jessica being held hostage. An unseen gang member was making Jessica scream as they stripped her, while Damnd told Haggar to be reasonable. Haggar refused to give in and went with Cody and Guy to the slums of Metro City to save her. Soon, Cody found Damnd with Jessica in the Slum Area. Damnd ran away while his helpers fought Cody and Guy. Even though Cody caught up to Damnd, Damnd had already passed Jessica to others, and she was gone. At first, Damnd surprised Cody, but Cody beat him badly to get information about where Jessica was. In 1988, Damnd joined the third Mad Gear boss, who was Rolento, a former high-ranking lieutenant who made himself the new boss. El Gado, Poison, Hugo, Sodom, and Edi. E were also on the same team as Damnd. Their mission under Rolento was to start a revenge war against Haggar, Guy, and Cody. After Zombie Belger was destroyed, Mad Gear was in chaos. Damnd was bored with being a small-time criminal. He wanted to go back to the tropics but couldn't resist fighting a few more times before leaving for good. Damnd still used some of his old moves from the original Final Fight, like the cannonball attack and emergency whistle, plus he had some new attacks too.

In the original Final Fight, Sodom was a high-ranking member and leader of the Mad Gear Gang. He was in charge of the Metro City Park/Subway District under Belger's orders. Sodom was undefeated in underground pro wrestling because he used "foreign objects" like swords. But he lost when he fought Guy, along with Cody and Haggar, who were trying to save Jessica (Cody's girlfriend and Haggar's daughter) from the Mad Gear Gang. At first, Sodom felt honored to fight a true Japanese ninja like Guy. But after Guy defeated him, Sodom felt deep shame. He hated Guy for helping get rid of the Mad Gear Gang and for ending his undefeated streak. This loss also made him lose respect among his gang members.

In Final Fight Revenge, Sodom wanted to bring back the Mad Gear Gang (which seems to be the same gang from Final Fight 2). He went to Japan to find strong fighters for the new group. The new gang spread worldwide and was led by a powerful second-in-command, a Japanese kabuki man named Retu. Rolento, who said he was Sodom's blood brother, was also part of the revived gang. They kidnapped Guy's fiancée Rena and her father Genryusai to get revenge. But this new Mad Gear was defeated by Haggar, Maki, and Carlos, who were friends of Guy. Retu was beaten by Maki, and the Mad Gear Gang was destroyed for good.

Edi. E is a crooked cop who served as a top lieutenant in Belger's Mad Gear Gang, overseeing the city's West Side. When Mike Haggar's daughter Jessica was kidnapped, Cody ran into Edi. E outside a bar and was disheartened to see Metro City’s corruption ran so deep that even the police sided with the gang. Despite Edi. E’s advantage with a gun, Cody fought and defeated him, sparking a lasting grudge. Edi. E cares nothing for the safety of his fellow gang members; all that matters to him is the hefty pay Belger gives him—far more than his low police salary—and stopping Cody and his friends. Later, Edi. E framed and arrested Cody for crimes committed by fellow gang member Poison during an ambush near a cemetery. While Cody had prior convictions for aggravated assault, he was innocent of these charges. Cody escapes prison whenever he pleases, and Edi. E is usually right on his trail, even showing up in one of Cody’s match win animations.

According to his original story, Rolento used to be part of a made-up US military special forces group called the Red Berets. This explains why he looks and fights like a soldier. But he left the military and became a mercenary for hire. He worked in many war zones and places with civil wars before the 1980s, including Africa, Eastern Europe, and Central and South America. He once worked with groups like the East Germany Stasi secret police and Colombian revolutionaries. His last mission was hinted to be the Vietnam War. Even though he and his team were very skilled, his time in war made him lose faith in politics and the world. He wanted to create a perfect country "for the military man, by the military man."

In Street Fighter EX (though Rolento never appeared in this series), it was said that his unit fought against Doctrine Dark's unit. Their fight started by accident but turned into a big battle because they didn't like each other. Rolento's team wiped out Doctrine's team, leaving Doctrine as the only survivor. This event made Doctrine go crazy, and Rolento was blamed for Doctrine's broken body and mental state. After this, the US government and other enemies started watching Rolento, so he went into hiding in the US. He found friends who shared his ideas in the Mad Gear gang and used old contacts, including the early Colombian drug trade, to help fund the group in Metro City.

Final Fight
In 1986, Rolento first appeared as the boss of the fourth stage. He was the second-in-command of Belger's Mad Gear gang. He was in charge of the gang's secret weapons factories in Metro City's industrial area and had a lot of power. He was defeated by Guy, who hurt him with a thrown shuriken. Instead of just disappearing like most enemies, Rolento blew himself up with his own grenades when he lost.

The Industrial Area stage and Rolento were left out of the SNES version of Final Fight (and its updated version, Final Fight Guy) because of limited space. Because of this, the creators of the second game decided to include him to make up for leaving him out before.

Final Fight 2
After the first game, Rolento is the boss of the fifth stage in Italy. He looks and fights the same as before. He is the only enemy from the first game to come back, besides the Andore Family. His name is shortened to "Rolent." When he loses, he tells Maki, Carlos, and Haggar to go to Japan while laughing evilly.

At some point, Abigail became the hired muscle of the Mad Gear Gang, even surpassing the Andore Family. His job was to steal vehicles, haul them away, and sell them illegally. His first paying customer was Bred, whose car was later destroyed by two heroic street fighters.

By 1986, Abigail was the fifth lieutenant in Belger’s crew, overseeing the city’s Bay Area. When Haggar’s daughter Jessica was kidnapped, Cody and Guy cut through the Bay Area on their way to Belger’s penthouse. There, they met Abigail, who said, “Hey, cool down. She must be having a good time with Belger!” Cody rushed ahead to save Jessica, leaving Guy to face Abigail. After a tough fight, Guy managed to defeat him.

Belger has the Mad Gears kidnap Jessica to extort political favors from Metro City’s mayor, Mike Haggar. Haggar refuses to comply and instead recruits Jessica’s boyfriend, Cody, along with Cody’s friend Guy, to drive the gang out and rescue her. Eventually, the trio learns Belger is the gang’s leader, leading to a showdown that ends with Cody punching him out a penthouse window.

In Mighty Final Fight, Belger kidnaps Jessica out of love, appearing as a cyborg who attacks with rocket punches.

In Final Fight Revenge, an undead Belger without his original personality appears as the final boss and is unplayable. Though the heroes destroy him, he infects Guy with a bite, prompting Guy to meditate to heal. Since Belger appears alive in the Street Fighter series, this game may not be canon.

Zombie Belger can stretch his limbs like Dhalsim, throw exploding organs, or blow himself up in a shower of body parts before reviving moments later. He can also vomit acid or bite opponents. As he takes damage, body parts fall off and can be used as weapons—his head even works like a bowling ball. Beating the game without continues rewards players with Zombie Belger mimicking the zombies from Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video.

During the kidnapping of Mayor Mike Haggar's daughter Jessica, Poison was part of the Mad Gear Gang. While little is known about her exact role, it’s known that she fought against the heroes. Later, Poison appears with Hugo in Street Fighter III: 2nd Impact and 3rd Strike as his manager, joining him on a search for a tag-team partner and making cameos in his intros and victory scenes. They eventually find a temporary partner and later form the HWA, a short-lived wrestling stable featuring various World Warriors. After Mad Gear’s fall, Poison becomes a wrestling manager, but her wrestlers fail to attract crowds. Hearing talk of the S.I.N. tournament, she storms the ring, takes down two of her own wrestlers, and decides to scout talent there. Post-tournament, she reconnects with Hugo, offering to manage him—an offer he hesitantly accepts. In her ending, she convinces Hugo, Rolento, Cody, and Guy to form a KISS-style rock band called the “Mad Gears,” with Ryu and Ken adding Hadoken pyrotechnics. After a major fallout with Hugo, Poison returns to New York, reunites with Roxy and Abigail, and challenges Abigail to test his strength. Despite his loss, she tries to recruit him for the tour but gets called out by Roxy for being selfish, prompting her to apologize after learning about Abigail’s business. She later visits city hall, spars with Cody—now Metro City’s mayor—who tells her they’ll hang out sometime.

Maki is the daughter of Genryusai and the younger sister of Rena. She is part of the Bushin clan along with Guy. In her school days, she was a troublemaker and led a biker gang. After their past defeat, the group called Mad Gear returned worldwide under Retu's leadership. To get revenge on Guy, Mad Gear kidnapped Genryusai and Rena. Since Guy (Rena's fiancé and Genryusai's student) was away training and couldn't help, Maki asked Haggar and Carlos Miyamoto for help. The three started a global search to find and save her family while breaking up all Mad Gear groups along the way.

When Maki and the others reached Italy, she fought Rolento. After losing, Rolento told them that Retu was holding her family hostage in Japan. Maki hurried back to Japan to save them, but first, they had to defeat Retu. In the final fight, Maki beat Retu by kicking him so hard he flew out of a window. With Retu seemingly dead and Mad Gear broken again, Maki saved her family.

In Capcom vs. SNK 2, Maki's story continues: she is trying to find Guy and fight him to see who is the true Bushin style successor after their father's death. She meets Sakura (who was with Dan Hibiki and Blanka), but Sakura doesn't recognize her and thinks she is a mafia thug from movies. They fight, and Maki wins after some effort. Maki tells Sakura she improved her fighting style, and Sakura says it was because of a fight with Guy. Surprised, Maki asks where Guy is, and Sakura says he went to Thailand. They go there, leaving Dan and Blanka behind, and meet Ken Masters, Ryu's friend and rival, who joins them after hearing Sakura's reasons for fighting.

In Thailand, they find Karin Kanzuki and Guy. But Maki arrives in the middle of Guy's fight with Shadaloo. Maki and Guy fight, but stop when they sense M. Bison, the evil Guy must defeat. The group finds Bison, who has powered up Ryu with Psycho Power, making Sakura very angry. Sagat arrives and fights Ryu, while Maki and the others fight Bison. Bison soon overwhelms Maki. Sakura tries to protect her and Ryu, but Bison knocks her down and calls her an insolent gnat. Before Bison can finish them, Ryu recovers, and he, Guy, and Ken join the fight, forcing Bison to retreat. Karin has Shibasaki destroy the Psycho Drive with her company's weaponized satellite. After Maki and Guy say goodbye to Sakura and the others, Maki shows some annoyance at her childhood friend but thanks him and says they will fight again. When Guy leaves, Maki says she may not be ready to lead yet, but she will be when they meet again, and she will win.

Carlos grew up in Mexico studying various martial arts and met Mike Haggar at a wrestling tournament, where they quickly became friends. Soon after, he moved to Metro City to finish his studies and lived with Haggar for a time. Despite mastering multiple fighting styles, Carlos prefers using his katana to take down enemies. Owing a past debt to both Haggar and Guy, he teams up with them and Maki to rescue her father and sister. After the events of Final Fight 2, Carlos freeloads at Haggar’s mansion while helping improve Metro City’s security. He appears in Lucia’s Street Fighter V arcade ending, oddly enjoying her terrible cooking, finishing four plates of failed curry rice that others can’t stomach. Carlos makes a cameo in The Macho Ring stage and shows up in World Tour mode as a tough opponent with his unique Ougi! Midaregiri attack, which is unblockable, armored, and extremely damaging. He’s also featured in the “They Call Him Carlos Miyamoto” Side-Mission, where the player aids him in investigating thugs before facing him again at a higher level. Later, he reappears in the Suval’hal Arena Throwdown Side-Mission under the alias Metro Protector, only revealing his identity after being defeated.

Won Won joined the revived Mad Gear Gang under Retu in Final Fight 2 and lay in wait to ambush Haggar, Maki, and Carlos when they arrived at the Hong Kong harbor. After being defeated, he revealed to the trio that the gang’s new base of operations was located in Europe.

Freddie, a former United States Marine, stood up to a corrupt officer who tried to exploit the troops for personal gain. During a training exercise, he accidentally killed the officer with a fake gun, sparking a brawl that resulted in his discharge. After leaving the Marines, he gathered some of his men and formed a roaming mercenary group, taking part in conflicts across the globe. In Final Fight 2, Freddie was recruited by Retu to lead the revived Mad Gear Gang’s terrorism unit in France. He and his crew clashed with Haggar, Maki, and Carlos when they arrived searching for Genryusai and Rena, but were ultimately defeated.

Looking to recruit new members for Retu's version of the Mad Gear Gang, several members lured Bratken by setting up an old castle in the Netherlands with a room full of toys, then locked him inside because he was far too powerful and uncontrollable. Before long, Bratken grew bored, broke out, and ended up facing Haggar, Maki, and Carlos as they tried to rescue Genryusai and Rena from the gang’s grasp.

Philippe is the charismatic ringmaster of the famous traveling R&B Circus, known for his impressive animal acts and juggling skills. But behind the scenes, this is just a front for his real role as the leader of a criminal organization smuggling drugs, weapons, and other contraband. In Final Fight 2, he teams up with the revived Mad Gear Gang, using his circus network to move illegal goods. He faces off against Haggar, Maki, and Carlos aboard a train in England, trying to thwart their mission to save Genryusai and Rena.

Retu has a mysterious past and is always seen in a full Kabuki costume. Known for his skills in kidnapping, intimidation, and sabotage, he re-formed the Mad Gear Gang sometime before the events of Final Fight 2. After taking control, he expanded the gang’s criminal operations across Asia. Seeking revenge for Belger’s death and the fall of the original gang, he ordered the kidnapping of Guy’s fiancée, Rena, and her father, Genryusai. With Guy away training, Rena’s sister Maki stepped in to save them, teaming up with Mike Haggar and Carlos Miyamoto. The trio fought their way to Retu’s hideout, defeating all his henchmen. In the final showdown, Maki kicked him out of a window, mirroring Belger’s defeat, though his fate remains unknown.

When the Skull Cross Gang took over the city after the fall of the Mad Gear Gang, they tried to recruit Dean. Knowing a lot about the gang, he refused their offer. In retaliation, Stray and the gang brutally murdered his family. Now consumed by grief, Dean is determined to avenge their deaths, always keeping a photo of his loved ones with him.

Presumably during the Slam Masters series, Lucia met Haggar and trained with him at the gym. There, she unknowingly showed her flaming ki for the first time, surprising both of them.

Final Fight 3
Lucia is a young and small female detective in the SCU (Special Crimes Unit) of the Metro City Police Department. She interrupts Haggar while he is talking with Guy to tell them the city is under attack. Lucia wants to thank Haggar personally because he had cleared her of a false corruption charge before. She joins forces with Haggar, Guy, and a mysterious street fighter named Dean to fight and defeat the Skull Cross Gang. This gang became the new main criminal group in Metro City after the Mad Gear Gang was destroyed.

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition
Lucia, along with E. Honda and Poison, was confirmed as a playable character in Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, making her first appearance in the Street Fighter games and her first playable role since Final Fight 3. This was first leaked in July 2019.

In her story, Lucia is making instant ramen noodles when Mike Haggar visits her. They remember their past mission against the Mad Gear gang. Haggar asks her to check out a scrap metal house owned by Abigail, thinking he is still part of the Mad Gear gang. Lucia fights Abigail and wins. Then she realizes Abigail is no longer with the Mad Gear gang because Abigail and Roxy mock Haggar for his ruined face paint during the fight.

Later, after Cody's story where he fought Guy's master Zeku and was scolded by Marlowe for breaking street lights, Lucia has a sparring match with Cody and wins. Cody remembers the old times when they worked together against the Mad Gear gang. Lucia realizes Cody is the same mayor who deals with shady people at night by taking action himself. When she goes back home, Lucia is shocked to find she forgot to eat her ramen noodles, which are now overcooked.

Lucia also appears in Poison's story. She is told that Mayor Cody was attacked by a thug, referring to Poison. But Cody says he and Poison had a “conversation” about their old days. Cody asks Lucia to help with other tasks alongside Poison. Later, Lucia has a heart-to-heart talk with Poison after learning Poison had a falling out with Hugo.

Dave was a crooked cop working for the Skull Cross Gang. Like Edi. E of Mad Gear, he often arrested rival gang members and low-level mafia lackeys, but was clever enough to use interrogations to squeeze information from them or bribe them for schemes, recruitment into Skull Cross, and betrayal. His patrol route often took him to a gas station near the police station, where he secretly met with the gang’s auto theft division and cross-country traffickers to help them alter (or fake) all kinds of vehicles. When Haggar, Guy, Lucia, and Dean went to Metro City’s police station to investigate an explosion, Dave was lying in wait at the gas station to ambush them. They fought—and beat him.

Callman runs and works as the head bouncer at an upscale pub called Club Sims (クラブ・シムス?) tucked away in Metro City’s backstreets, where he picks up information about the city. A true professional, he keeps everything in order as both the hardworking boss and head of security, earning the respectful title of “Mr. Callman” from his staff. Inspired by British-style dining from his hometown, he designed the place to serve favorites like fish and chips—deep-fried white fish in peanut oil, best enjoyed with dark ales. Though intimidating when angry, he’s usually calm and kind. When Haggar, Guy, Lucia, and Dean chased the Skull Cross Gang into the club, Callman tried to stop them from stirring up trouble, but ended up getting overpowered.

Caine is a tall man with a hunched back, long arms, and unusually large forearms and hands. His hair is stringy and orange, though sometimes depicted as gray or brown in promotional art, and he sports a black horseshoe mustache. He wears a worn green baseball cap and matching uniform with ripped sleeves, along with brown gloves, black boots, and a tool belt. His eyes are always hidden behind protective goggles, and he wields a large wrench as his weapon of choice.

Since childhood, Caine had an obsessive habit of taking apart machines and gadgets, often sneaking into the local car factory with his father’s tools to dismantle and reassemble whatever he could get his hands on. To indulge this fixation, he eventually ran away from home and lived in a scrapyard, spending his days destroying and restoring appliances. Known to be antisocial and preferring solitude, he earned the nickname “The Destroyer” for his manic tinkering. Working as a mechanic for the Skull Cross Gang, he faced Haggar, Guy, Lucia, and Dean at a trainyard in Metro City, battling them atop a broken-down bus—only to be defeated.

Drake is a sailor who worked as a weapons smuggler for the Skull Cross Gang. He captained a modified cargo ship the gang used to sneak weapons into Metro City. Depending on the player’s path, he ends up fighting Haggar, Guy, Lucia, and Dean when they board his ship, but ultimately, they defeat him.

Wong was a master chef and the proud owner of a prestigious Chinese restaurant in Metro City’s Chinatown. While his culinary skills and business appeared completely legitimate, behind the scenes he was the underworld’s ring leader and the neighborhood’s turf boss. He smuggled food and resources for the Skull Cross Gang to earn extra cash, used his restaurant to eavesdrop on rival gangs and mobs, and even handled weapons smuggled by Drake at the port. Eventually, he clashed with Haggar, Guy, Lucia, and Dean in his restaurant’s kitchen, but ultimately, he was defeated.

Stray started out as a professional serial killer, eventually catching the eye of the Skull Cross Gang. Impressed by his skill in wetwork and covering his tracks, the gang brought him in, and he quickly climbed the ranks through various hit jobs and assassinations. One job involved killing Dean's family to pressure him into joining Skull Cross. On the day of the riots staged to break Black out of prison, Stray faced off against Haggar, Guy, Lucia, and Dean in a gang-owned factory that secretly produced high-grade black market weapons. Riding around on a crane in the refinery and blast furnace, he put up a fight, but they ultimately defeated him.

Black was the leader of the Skull Cross Gang, which rose to power in Metro City after the Mad Gear Gang was taken down. Once a mercenary leading a special forces team, he brought his military skills to the streets and rallied his comrades to form Skull Cross. With Mad Gear gone, their combat expertise crushed every rival gang, and Black quickly became the new boss of Metro City’s criminal underworld. He was eventually caught and imprisoned, but the gang busted him out by blowing up a police station during the riots. Mike Haggar, Lucia, Guy, and Dean tracked them to their skyscraper headquarters, fighting their way to the roof. Black arrived by helicopter to face them but was knocked into a high-voltage transformer, electrocuted, and killed. The resulting chain reaction destroyed the building and ended the Skull Cross Gang’s plans to take over the city.

Now that we’ve covered the main game’s characters, before wrapping up this essay, I should mention two non-canon spin-off games: *Mighty Final Fight* and *Final Fight Streetwise*. *Mighty Final Fight* is essentially an alternate version of the first game, featuring a Ghibli-inspired art style and an even more kid-friendly story. The main difference is that Belger kidnaps Jessica because he wants to marry her and take over the city, prompting Haggar, Guy, and Cody to once again set out on a mission to save her. *Final Fight Streetwise* is a 3D game that serves as a non-canon sequel to the original, focusing on Kyle Travers, Cody’s brother. The Slam Masters series, centered around wrestling matches, also featured Haggar as one of its characters.

This marks the end of my Final Fight essay. I hope you enjoyed reading it, and stay tuned for the next (and probably final) essay in the Street Fighter extended universe, which will be about Rival Schools.
